Newport Harbor High School Commemorates Grandparents Day
Posted 11/19/19

Each Fall, Newport Harbor High School (NHHS) hosts its annual Grandparents Day, an event that has grown since its inception 15 years ago. This year more than 500 grandparents and 1,000 students participated.

The event is a collaboration between the Newport Harbor Schools Foundation, the school administration, and the community. Proud grandparents and special guests (attending in lieu of grandparents) fly in as far away as Hawaii to participate in the morning program, which is followed by lunch with their grandchildren.

The goal of the program is to give students a formal opportunity to bond with their grandparents or special guest and learn from them and their history.

Guests are greeted by student musicians and choral acapella singers in the theater foyer, prior to a presentation by administrators, alumni, and students from various athletic and academic programs. Guests learned about what student life at NHHS entails and were presented the student-created A Day in the Life of Sailor video, along with other student-created videos showcasing specific student programs and offerings.

Grandparents and grandchild(ren) convened for lunch, while other students assisted in serving food and desserts (baked by NHHS culinary students) and capturing photos. This year, guests received a commemorative frame bearing the school’s name and the date.

“This is such an awesome tradition for everyone,” said NHHS Principal Dr. Sean Boulton. “The event strengthens the relationship between the parent group and the school community,” he said.
